The history of the Haapsalu resort dates back to 1820, when district physician Carl Abraham Hunnius came to work in Haapsalu. While treating local residents, Hunnius encountered a peculiar folk medicine method – sea mud. Dr. Hunnius had the chemical composition of the sea mud analyzed and tested a new mud therapy method on his patients. In 1825, the firts water-mud bethhouse was opened in Haapsalu.

Over the years, Haapsalu became one of the most beloved resort towns. As knowledge about the existence and properties of mud therapy grew, the practice underwent many stages of development. From primitive treatment methods, modern and versatile mud procedures have evolved to support the treatment of various diseases.

Mud treatments stimulate metabolism, accelerate cell regeneration, and help remove excess fluids and waste products from the body. As a result of mud procedures, pulse rate increases, breathing may quicken at the beginning of the treatment, and blood circulation improves. At the start of a treatment course, chronic conditions may temporarily worsen due to activated metabolism. The stimulation of numerous skin receptors by warm mud enhances inhibitory processes in the cerebral cortex, which explains the drowsiness experienced during and especially after the procedure. After the treatment, one feels relaxed.

Mud therapy is beneficial for chronic inflammations, such as joint and muscle inflammations, and also acts as a pain reliever. It is well-suited for various skin conditions, such as dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. It can help with allergies, rheumatic diseases, spinal disorders, muscle atrophy, gynecological conditions, and certain internal diseases. The procedure also promotes the healing of adhesions and scarring after trauma of surgery. Natural sea mud is intended for external use according to the indications and contraindications of mud therapy.

Therapeutic mud can be used on the entire body to alleviate health issues, for cosmetic treatments, and for home spa sauna procedures.
